What happens when you use Personal Interest Projects in Secondary?


At the beginning of term 4 I took over a year 10 IST. To address the learning outcomes linked to the the future uses of technology I designed a Personal Interest Project that utilised the schools Makerspace.


You can:
  1. Justify responsible practices and ethical use of information and software technology
  2. Analyse the effects of past, current and emerging information and software technologies on the individual and society.

Students were given a Project Sheet.
One of the key components of the project was blogging. Students were required to keep a record of their progress using a blog. The Project Sheet included a list of possible questions they could blog about.

Unfortunately I did not have a camera on hand to take pics of the amazing products in the class presentations.

This post considers how to improve performance in NAPLAN ( National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) by ensuring your students have the digital literacy skills to sit an online test. This post considers the year 3 reading test.  In year 3 the writing test is still paper based and the rest are online. From year 5 all tests are online including the writing test that is now typed. This post considers the digital literacy skills required by year 5 students to complete the Numeracy NAPLAN test. Data Representation

Data Representation is mentioned in the primary curriciulum from Foundation to Year 6. In years F-4 it refers to how data can be represented referring to the use of symbols, images, text and numbers. In years 5-6 it is refering to the use of numbers specifically binary and computers use binary to store and transmit information. Data Representation is how data is represented and structured symbolically for storage and communcation by people and digital systems. Information can be transmitted with pictures and images, symbols, text and numbers. Microbits and Measuring for Earthquakes

  Sudden geological changes ... that can affect Earth's surface  (ACSSU096)  is list ed in the primary curriculum as a year 6 topic. Amongst other possible events this is an opportunity to explore earthquakes. Using the accelerometer on a Microbit you can be measure movement for an  Earthquake Experiment such as the one created by Australian Earthscience Earthquake Experiment This video below shows how simple the code is to use the Microbit. Makey Makey Interactive Poster

Updated September 2021 ----------------------------- The curriculum is overloaded, how to integrate new technologies and coding without adding additional content. The key is to integrate the ideas. This lesson took 2 hours and we completed it in one 2 hour session. Ensure you have equity with access to all tasks eg: boys don't dominate the using the technology while girls colour. Building teacher capacity is difficult.  The demand for teachers to have skills in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Design Technologies, Digital Technologies (DT) and Digital Systems is increasing. This is parallel to the demand for teachers to up-skill with future focussed pedagogies such as Project Based Learning (PBL), Superclasses and the effective use of Flexible Learning Spaces (FLS). In addition, is the debate, is it the individuals responsibility or the schools to provide learning opportunities? I believe it is a bit of both. As professionals we need to ensure our skills stay current and up-skill to meet the demands of our changing profession. This post is investigates the digital skills required for the Conventions of Language NAPLAN test. After review the Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 NAPLAN tests the skills seem similar for each test. BOSTES lauches STEM and coding support for NSW Teachers

Coding and Computational Thinking in NSW Curriculum In May 2016 BOSTES released a support document for NSW teachers. The document offers teachers ideas for integrating coding and computational thinking into each of the key learning areas. The first page http://k6.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/go/science-and-technology/statement-on-coding  has definitions and links to useful resources. This page is definitely worth exploring as many of them are free and they are useful in multiple key learning areas across multiple year groups. The document is divided into stages. By clicking on the button for a stage it will open a page with lesson ideas grouped under each key learning area. The activities are designed to be similar to the many tasks that teachers use regularly.   This years NSS 2024 is using the book Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. What a lovely way to link a native Australian bird with some interesting habits and mating rituals with literacy and technology. Technology Links - Data Representation Satin Bowerbirds collect blue objects. This is a lesson that links to the book and allows you to teach about data representation and address digital technology content and link to any literacy activities you have planned for NSS 2024.  Data Representation Collect a range of blue items and sort them according a particular characteristic - colour, shape, size or material.
